Trying to decide between a MAG device and an Android TV box. I have a non-technical household — my partner is not interested in tech and just wants to turn the TV on and watch. I am slightly more technical. Which device suits a mixed-tech household better?

For a mixed-tech household, MAG is the better choice for the non-technical users. Here is why:\n\n**MAG simplicity:**\n• Turn on → portal loads → channel list appears → select channel → watch\n• No apps to update, no app store, no software management\n• Remote with numbered buttons for direct channel entry — feels like a traditional TV remote\n• If something goes wrong, the fix is usually just power cycling

**Android TV box flexibility:**\n• Supports multiple apps (TiviMate, XCIPTV, Netflix, YouTube, etc.)\n• More features and customisation for technically-inclined users\n• Requires periodic app updates, Android OS updates, storage management\n• More complex to set up initially\n• Better for users who want to do more than just watch IPTV

UK user — we have a MAG in the main living room (used by the whole family including elderly relatives) and an Android box in my home office. The MAG requires zero involvement from me — my elderly parents use it without any issues. The Android box is my personal device where I do not mind managing apps.

Ireland — the key question is not which is better technically, but who is going to manage the device day to day. If you are willing to maintain an Android box (updates, occasional troubleshooting), it offers more. If you want to set it up once and never think about it again, MAG is the right choice.

Canada — a compromise approach: get an Android TV box but set up a simple launcher (like a dedicated IPTV launcher) that presents only the IPTV app to non-technical users. They see only the IPTV interface and nothing else. You still have access to the full Android TV settings when needed.

The custom launcher approach is good for technical users who want the flexibility of Android TV but want non-technical family members to have a simple experience. Apps like "IPTV Simple Launcher" or a configured generic launcher can create a MAG-like front end on an Android box.

Australia — for a truly zero-maintenance experience: MAG with a reliable service. I set up my parents' MAG two years ago and have not touched it since. They call me if something goes wrong but it has been exactly twice in two years (one power cut reset the portal URL, one firmware notification they ignored correctly).

New Zealand — one practical consideration: MAG devices do not have microphones or cameras. For households concerned about smart device privacy, MAG is the most privacy-respecting IPTV device option.
