MAG remote not responding — troubleshooting and solutions

Opening this discussion to share what I've learned and hear from others with similar experiences.

My MAG remote suddenly stopped responding. Device is still on and shows signal.

First check: replace the batteries even if you think they're fine. Low battery is the most common cause.

Next: check if there's anything blocking the IR sensor on the front of the MAG box.

Cleaned the sensor area. Still nothing.

Try pointing the remote directly at the front panel from very close range.

IR remotes require direct line-of-sight and sometimes the blaster angle is off.

Then it might be the remote itself. Test with another MAG remote or a universal remote.

Used a universal remote programmed for MAG — it works!

So the original remote died. MAG remotes can wear out especially the IR emitter.

What smartphone app works with MAG?

Generic IR remotes compatible with MAG are available. Or use a smartphone app as remote.

The STBEmu app can serve as a remote. Also some MAG controllers on Android work.

Ordered a replacement. Works great. Problem was definitely the remote hardware.
