After seeing multiple users brick their MAG devices or lose working configurations from unnecessary firmware updates, here is my guide on when updates are actually needed.

This is essential reading. Firmware updates on MAG devices carry real risk and should not be done unless there is a specific reason.

The golden rule: if your MAG is working correctly, do not update the firmware. There is nothing to gain and multiple ways to lose.

Legitimate reasons to update:
1. A specific bug you are experiencing is confirmed fixed in a newer version.
2. Your provider requires a minimum firmware version.
3. A security vulnerability has been announced for your current version.
4. You are experiencing the known URL-not-persisting issue that was fixed in later releases.

How do I check if a new firmware version actually fixes my specific issue?

Check the official Infomir changelog at infomir.eu. They publish detailed release notes for each firmware version.

Leave it alone. The risk of breaking a working setup is higher than any benefit from updating when you have no active issues.

My MAG 524 is still on firmware from 2021 and works perfectly. I see no reason to update.

Exactly the right approach. Stability is the goal, not running the latest firmware.

When you DO decide to update:
1. Screenshot or note your portal URL and custom settings.
2. Download firmware only from infomir.eu for your specific model.
3. Use USB flash drive method, not over-network update.
4. Have the factory reset process ready in case of issues.
5. Do not interrupt power during the update.

The USB method is much safer than over-network updates. Network interruption during an OTA update can brick the device.

After any firmware update, verify the portal URL is still entered correctly and all settings are as expected before considering the update successful.

Moderator reminder: if you experience firmware-related issues, document your MAG model, old firmware version, and new firmware version when asking for help. This information is essential for accurate advice.
